It all started in 1995 when Kevin Plank, a special teams captain at the University of Maryland football team, noticed that the cotton T-shirts he and his teammates wore under their shoulder pads were soaked and heavy with sweat.

"There has to be something better," he thought. Little did he know that this brief thought would create a company called Under Armour that would change the sportswear industry forever.

After graduating, he headed to New York City's famous fashion district for fabric samples, sewed his first prototype Under Armour HeatGear® T-shirt from a board, which he then gave to his Maryland teammates and teammates who went on to the NFL. With their feedback, he went back to work, creating a revolutionary microfiber shirt that held moisture capillary action so athletes could feel cool and dry. The new Under Armour HeatGear T-shirt model was coded #0037.

To start the production line, he used up all of his credit cards to the tune of $40,000 and started the company in his grandmother’s basement in Washington, D.C. Twelve months later, he got his first team at Georgia Tech, to which he sold T-shirts.

In 1997, Under Armour introduced its new ColdGear fabric, which kept you warm and lightweight in winter conditions. It then introduced AllSeasonGear fabric, which worked great between extremes.

Straight out of grandma’s basement in 1998, Under Armour moved into a new headquarters and warehouse in Baltimore. In 1999, UA broke some special lines when Warner Brothers contacted Under Armour to outfit actors in two upcoming American football movies, Any Given Sunday and The Replacements.

In the following years, Under Armour became the official outfitter of the XFL football league.

He has recently expanded the Under Armour TurfGear, AllseasonGear and StreetGear product lines, which have placed Under Armour at the forefront of the growing performance apparel industry. In 2003, Under Armour launched the Performance Gear line of products for women.

UA Give Back was initiated by Under Armour as part of an effort to engage with different aspects of the global community. UA has different divisions within the organization that specialize in each cause and demonstrate that Under Armour supports. These consist of UA Power in Pink, UA Freedom, UA Green, and UA Youth Movement.
